It wasn't so long ago that all a bank director needed to do was to exercise good faith business judgment to meet expectations and avoid personal liability. While that is still the legal standard of care in most states, the FDIC suits against directors of failed banks implicitly are assuming that directors have a skill set that many currently lack.

AABD’s Agenda covers both AABD’s advocacy and educational/informational efforts for 2013. AABD welcomes members and other directors to make suggestions on possible additions to the agenda.

But in 1994, as the S&L crisis began to subside, AABD decided that it was time to support the education of bank directors. It formed the Institute for Bank Director Education to act as a clearinghouse for programs suitable for bank directors. We didn’t find many at the time. We urged other banking trade associations and banking schools to provide such programs, and, over time, such programs became available for directors.
